Our curriculum

We combine the Early Years Foundation Stage with Montessori principles, so learning is structured, hands-on and led by the child.

The Early Years Foundation Stage

The EYFS sets out early learning goals most children are expected to reach by the end of their reception year. At Little Elms, every aspect of our curriculum is designed around the EYFS framework, and we're proud to have developed our own enrichment activities to complement and elevate it.

Areas of learning

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development

01

Planning

Each term we choose topics shaped by the children's own interests, broken down into weekly and daily plans across every area of learning. Parents are kept informed via notice boards and newsletters.

02

Learning through play

Every toy, resource and activity is chosen to support a planned learning outcome. Staff present activities and observe continuously, assessing each child's development.

03

Observation and assessment

Children are observed throughout the session and progress is recorded, shared with parents and used to plan each child's next steps.

The Montessori approach

The Little Elms way of education, infused with Montessori principles, is our bespoke approach to creating brighter futures together. Integrating Montessori with the EYFS gives children a child-centred environment where independence, exploration and self-directed learning are nurtured.

Rather than transmitting fixed blocks of knowledge, the Montessori method supports the natural development of the child. Our role as adults is to help each child's inborn developmental powers unfold, securing the foundations for lifelong learning, curiosity, creativity and confidence.
